How to Point a Domain to Your Hosting, Step by Step

Two ways to connect a domain to hosting: change the name servers or add an A record. Includes a Hostinger example and how to check it worked.

Pointing a domain tells the internet which server should answer when someone types your name. There are two methods; you only need one.

If you bought the domain and hosting from the same provider, it is usually connected already. Check before changing anything.

Method 1: Change the name servers

The simplest option. Your host then manages all DNS records for you.

  1. In your hosting dashboard, find the name servers. For Hostinger they are usually ns1.dns-parking.com and ns2.dns-parking.com.
  2. Sign in where you bought the domain and open its settings.
  3. Replace the old name servers with the new two and save.

Method 2: Add an A record

Use this if you want to keep DNS where the domain is registered (for example, to keep existing email).

  1. Copy your hosting’s IP address.
  2. Open DNS management at your domain provider.
  3. Set the A record for @ to that IP.
  4. Add a CNAME for www pointing to your main domain.

How long it takes

Usually minutes to a few hours, occasionally up to 24–48 hours while networks update. Seeing the old site now and then during this time is normal.

Check that it worked

  • Use the REG whois lookup to see the current name servers.
  • Open your site in a private window or on mobile data to avoid cached pages.

After it’s connected

Turn on SSL in your hosting dashboard for the https padlock. Most hosts issue it free and renew it automatically.
