What Is a Domain Name? A 3-Minute Guide for Beginners
A domain name is your website’s address. Learn its parts, how it differs from hosting, the naming rules, and how to pick your first one.
A domain name is your website’s address on the internet, like saigoncoffee.com. Computers find each other with numbers called IP addresses; people remember words. A domain is the memorable name that stands in for those numbers.
The parts of a domain
Take saigoncoffee.com.vn:
- saigoncoffee is the name you choose.
- .com.vn is the ending (TLD). Popular global endings are .com, .net and .org. Vietnam’s are .vn and .com.vn.
Every domain is unique. Once you register it, nobody else can use that exact name while you keep renewing it.
Domain vs hosting
Think of a website as a shop:
- The domain is the shop’s address.
- Hosting is the building where your pages and images live.
You need both. The good news: hosting plans of 12 months or more usually include a free first-year domain.
Naming rules
- Letters a–z, numbers 0–9 and hyphens only.
- No spaces or accents.
- It can’t start or end with a hyphen.
- Up to 63 characters, but shorter is better.
How long does registration take?
Global endings like .com are ready within minutes. .vn names need an extra document step and are usually done the same day.
